The Smart Upgrade for Existing HP M404dn Users

The biggest advantage of upgrading from the HP LaserJet Pro M404dn to the HP LaserJet Managed E40040dn is not simply that you receive a newer or more business-focused printer.

The real advantage is that you can move to the Managed platform without abandoning your existing toner investment.

Many businesses that have used the M404dn, M404dw or related HP 404-series printers already keep spare HP 76A or 76X toner cartridges in stock. Moving to a completely different printer family can make those existing consumables redundant.

With the E40040dn, that problem is avoided.

The E40040dn supports both the Genuine HP 76A CF276A Black Toner Cartridge and the Genuine HP 76X CF276X High Yield Black Toner Cartridge.

Your existing genuine HP 76A / 76X toner stock therefore remains useful. You can upgrade the printer first, continue consuming your existing toner inventory, and only change your consumables purchasing strategy when you are ready.

Then Move to Managed Toner for Lower Running Costs

Once your existing HP 76A and 76X toner stock has been used, the E40040dn gives you another important option HP Managed toner.

The HP W9024MC Managed Black Toner Cartridge provides an approximate yield of 11,500 pages and is designed for compatible HP LaserJet Managed printers including the E40040 series.

This gives businesses a practical two-stage upgrade strategy:

1. Upgrade the hardware now from M404dn to E40040dn at no additional upgrade charge.
2. Continue using existing Genuine HP 76A / 76X cartridges so your current toner inventory is not wasted.
3. After your existing toner stock is exhausted, transition to W9024MC Managed toner to take advantage of the Managed consumables platform and potentially reduce ongoing cost per page.

For businesses with higher print volumes, these ongoing consumable savings can become increasingly significant over the life of the printer and can help offset the original hardware investment.

Three Genuine HP Toner Options

This flexibility is one of the strongest reasons to choose the E40040dn as a replacement for the M404dn: you do not have to throw away your existing toner investment, but you gain the option to move to a more economical Managed consumable strategy later.

M404dn vs E40040dn What Do You Gain?

More Than a Toner Upgrade Stronger Business Hardware

The consumable flexibility is a major reason to move to the E40040dn, but the hardware itself is also designed for a heavier business workload.

The E40040dn provides 1GB base memory and 4GB eMMC storage, compared with 256MB memory on the M404dn.

It also increases the maximum monthly duty cycle from approximately 80,000 pages to 120,000 pages, while HP’s recommended monthly print volume increases from approximately 7504,000 pages to 1,5007,500 pages.

For a business whose print volume has grown since purchasing an M404-series printer, the E40040dn therefore provides significantly more headroom for future printing requirements.

Same Familiar Everyday Features

Although the E40040dn moves to HP’s Managed platform, the core features M404dn users rely on remain familiar:

• Up to 40ppm A4 in HP High Speed Mode
• Automatic two-sided printing

Why This FREE Upgrade Makes Sense

For an existing M404dn customer, replacing the printer is not only about the purchase price of the new hardware. Existing toner inventory and future consumable costs can represent a substantial part of the total investment.

The E40040dn solves both issues.

First, your existing Genuine HP 76A and 76X cartridges can continue to be used. You do not need to discard or write off toner already sitting on your shelf.

Second, once that existing stock is exhausted, you gain access to the higher-capacity W9024MC Managed toner option. For regular and higher-volume users, the lower ongoing consumable cost can accumulate over thousands of pages and help recover the cost of the printer itself over its working life.

At the same time, you are moving to a more capable business printer with more memory, embedded storage, a higher maximum duty cycle and a significantly higher recommended monthly print volume.

That is why we consider the E40040dn a genuine upgrade from the M404dn not simply a substitute.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I searched for an HP M404dn. Why will I receive an E40040dn?

The HP LaserJet Pro M404dn [W1A53A] is no longer available from our current stock. Rather than moving customers to a completely different printer platform, we are providing the HP LaserJet Managed E40040dn [3PZ35A] as a FREE UPGRADE.

I already have spare HP 76A toner cartridges. Can I still use them?

Yes. This is one of the most important benefits of the upgrade. The E40040dn supports the Genuine HP 76A CF276A Black Toner Cartridge, so existing genuine 76A toner stock does not need to be wasted.

I have HP 76X High Yield cartridges left from my M404dn. Can I use those too?

Yes. The E40040dn also supports the Genuine HP 76X CF276X High Yield Black Toner Cartridge with approximately 10,000-page capacity.

This is particularly valuable for businesses that already keep multiple 76X cartridges in stock. You can replace the printer without writing off that consumable inventory.

What should I do after my existing 76A / 76X toner stock runs out?

You have a choice. You can continue purchasing genuine HP 76A / 76X cartridges, or you can transition to the HP W9024MC Managed Black Toner Cartridge, which provides approximately 11,500 pages and is designed for the E40040 Managed platform.

Why would I switch from 76X to W9024MC Managed toner?

The main reason is long-term running cost. The W9024MC provides a higher rated capacity than the 10,000-page 76X and can be a substantially more economical consumable option where available.

For a business printing thousands of pages every month, even a relatively small reduction in cost per page accumulates over the life of the printer. This means the savings generated by Managed toner can progressively offset the original hardware investment.

Do I have to use Managed toner immediately?

No. That is precisely why this upgrade is attractive for existing M404dn customers. You can continue using your existing genuine 76A and 76X toner inventory first. When those cartridges have been consumed, you can decide whether to continue with 76A / 76X or transition to W9024MC Managed toner.

So my existing M404dn toner investment is not wasted?

Correct. Existing genuine HP 76A CF276A and 76X CF276X cartridges can continue to be used with the E40040dn. This provides a much smoother migration path than changing to a completely different printer family requiring different consumables.

Apart from toner cost, what hardware improvements do I get?

The E40040dn provides 1GB memory plus 4GB eMMC storage, compared with 256MB memory on the M404dn. It also increases the maximum monthly duty cycle from approximately 80,000 to 120,000 pages and increases HP’s recommended monthly print volume from approximately 7504,000 pages to 1,5007,500 pages.

Will I lose any important M404dn features?

For the core business-printing functions, the experience remains very familiar. The E40040dn provides up to 38ppm standard A4 printing, automatic duplex, Gigabit Ethernet and 350-sheet standard input capacity the key features that made the M404dn popular.

Is the E40040dn simply another name for the M404dn?

No. They are different HP product models. The M404dn belongs to the LaserJet Pro family, while the E40040dn belongs to HP’s LaserJet Managed family. They share many core printing characteristics and toner options, but the E40040dn provides a heavier-duty workload profile, more memory, embedded storage and access to the Managed consumables platform.

Is the E40040dn suitable for higher-volume printing?

Yes. HP rates the E40040dn for a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to approximately 120,000 pages and recommends approximately 1,5007,500 pages per month, making it better suited to heavier business workloads than the M404dn.

Do I pay extra for the E40040dn upgrade?

No. When you order through this M404dn listing, the E40040dn is supplied as a FREE UPGRADE with no additional upgrade charge.
